For The Birds
2007
How taxonomies of nature and the body became intertwined with decorative strategies of imperial power.
For the Birds is an installation that examines the construction of “otherness” through systems of display shaped by the Western patriarchal gaze. Combining taxidermied birds with decorative surfaces derived from nineteenth-century books of medical curiosities, the work exposes how both colonised nature and the abnormal body were aestheticised, classified, and transformed into consumable spectacle within scientific and imperial cultures of viewing.
At the centre of the installation are two-headed taxidermy birds suspended in artificial motion before a backdrop of ceramic tiles printed with illustrations of pathological anomalies and rare specimens. Removed from ecological or scientific context, the birds and medical imagery function as ornamental devices — objects organised less for knowledge than for fascination, possession, and display.
Drawing on the visual language of bourgeois interiors, zoological collections, and cabinets of curiosities, the installation reflects on how difference itself became decorative within colonial modernity. Exotic animals and medicalised bodies circulated through the same structures of spectatorship: isolated, aestheticised, and rendered visible through regimes of classification controlled by European systems of knowledge and power.
By collapsing scientific illustration into decorative surface, Cibic reveals the proximity between taxonomy, ornament, and domination. The installation mimics the seductive language of collectible luxury objects while exposing the ideological structures concealed beneath aesthetic refinement. Suspended between specimen and ornament, nature and fabrication, the birds become stand-ins for broader systems through which alterity is framed and consumed.
For the Birds ultimately reflects on the persistence of exhibitionary cultures that continue to organise visibility through fascination, exoticism, and control.
