Jasmina Cibic
Jasmina Cibic is an artist and filmmaker whose work examines the relationship between art and culture, patriarchal power and collective imagination through a feminist lens.
Jasmina Cibic is a Slovenian artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans film, photography, installation, sculpture, and performance. Her work interrogates how culture is mobilised as an instrument of statecraft and soft power, particularly at moments of ideological fracture or political recalibration. Through research-driven projects that weave together archival material, policy language, and allegorical staging, Cibic exposes the entanglements of art, architecture, gender, and national identity.
Operating simultaneously as analyst and storyteller, she constructs seductive visual environments that restage the protocols of cultural diplomacy—revealing how art and culture are routinely positioned as pawns within larger political narratives, instrumentalised to stabilise power, manufacture consensus, or rehearse visions of unity. In her work, cultural diplomacy emerges not as benign exchange, but as a contested arena of image management, narrative control, and geopolitical negotiation.
Cibic represented Slovenia at the 55th Venice Biennale and has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, macLyon, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, Museum Sztuki Łódź, CCA Glasgow, the Phi Foundation Montreal, Belvedere 21 Vienna, Kunstmuseum Krefeld, MG+MSUM Ljubljana, and group exhibitions at MOMA New York, MAXXI Rome, IMMA Dublin, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Biennale Jogja, and Sharjah Biennial.
Her films have been screened at The High Line NY, Whitechapel Gallery, MOMA New York, BFI London Film Festival, HKW Berlin, the Louvre, Dokfest Kassel and Copenhagen International Documentary Festival among others.
She is the recipient of the Film London Jarman Award (2021) and her monographs include Stagecraft (macLyon), NADA (KERBER/Kunstmuseen Krefeld), Most Favoured Nation (Hatje Cantz/MdMS), and Spielraum (BALTIC/Distanz).
