u3 – 6th triennial of contemporary art in slovenia

The catalogue accompanying the 6th U3 Triennial of Contemporary Art in Slovenia, curated by Charles Esche, examines how artists across different generations engage with questions of realism and reality within contemporary artistic practice.

Rather than focusing on introspective or purely formal concerns, the exhibition foregrounded works rooted in relationships between artists and their external environments — including histories, communities, ecological conditions, labour, family structures, and systems of social exchange. The publication situates contemporary Slovenian art within a broader historical continuity of socially engaged and reality-based practices, tracing connections between post-war realism, conceptual strategies, and contemporary forms of critical artistic production.

A significant aspect of the exhibition involved the inclusion of works from the Moderna Galerija collection dating back to the 1940s, establishing a dialogue between historical and contemporary practices. Through this juxtaposition, the catalogue explores how Slovenian artists have repeatedly challenged the autonomy of art by incorporating political realities, everyday life, and social relations into artistic form.

Through essays, artist presentations, and visual documentation, the publication reflects on realism not as a fixed style, but as an evolving methodology for negotiating the relationship between art and lived experience. In doing so, the catalogue positions contemporary art as a field deeply embedded within broader questions of collective memory, public life, and social responsibility.
