Cibic, Charm offensive, crop

This publication accompanies Jasmina Cibic’s Charm Offensive, bringing together the research, collaborations, and conceptual framework underpinning the project. Developed in collaboration with international botanical illustrators, the book traces Cibic’s investigation into the entanglement of botany, colonial expansion, and the aesthetics of power.

Structured as a subversion of the traditional botanical compendium, the publication presents the illustrations as a play on scientific plant catalogues. Instead of taxonomic descriptions, each entry is accompanied by a speculative text that reimagines the plant through its Latin name—names that commemorate colonisers, explorers, and agents of empire. In this reversal, nomenclature becomes both subject and material, exposing how systems of classification functioned historically as tools of authority, erasure, and control.

Within this framework, the individual illustrations operate as acts of critical reconstruction. In one example, a plant bearing the name of Hans Sloane is rendered through a composite image that merges known regional flora with cocoa beans—an associative gesture that links botanical classification to histories of extraction and exploitation. Sloane’s legacy, often celebrated within institutional narratives, is here reframed through his role in colonial economies: his work as a physician on slave plantations, his reliance on enslaved labour for the accumulation of specimens, and his financial ties to plantation systems. The illustration does not seek botanical accuracy, nor does it rely on external references; instead, it materialises a historical condition through visual synthesis, collapsing taxonomy, commodity, and empire into a single constructed form.

Alongside these works, the publication includes a series of engraved motifs of botanical enclosures—iron gates and garden structures—inscribed with phrases that move between horticulture and political rhetoric. These elements foreground the shared language of cultivation and governance, revealing how systems designed to classify and nurture life have also functioned as mechanisms of control.

Extending beyond documentation, the book frames Charm Offensive as a critical re-reading of botanical and political histories, bringing into the foreground the mechanisms through which systems of authority naturalise their power. By reconfiguring their visual and linguistic elements, Cibic proposes a speculative space in which these inherited structures can be questioned, rewritten, and opened to alternative narratives.
